Obituary for Dianne Brushett (Tompkins)

Dianne Brushett (Tompkins)
In Loving Memory

Dianne Marie Tompkins Brushett
October 11, 1942 – July 11, 2017

It is with profound heartbreak that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Dianne Tompkins Brushett on July 11th, 2017.
A graceful warrior, with a sharp, witty, irreverent personality, Dianne was an adventurer, gourmet cook, avid gardener, lover of animals and music, faithful church member, devoted daughter, mother, and grandmother. Dianne fought an epic battle with leukemia over the past fourteen months and passed peacefully at home in the loving arms of her children with fresh lilacs in bloom.
Born in Bath, New Brunswick, Dianne was the youngest daughter of the late Margaret (Wright) Tompkins and Arthur Ford. After graduating from the University of New Brunswick as class valedictorian, Dianne travelled abroad for six months, hitchhiking across Europe and experiencing the kindness of many strangers.
In 1966, Dianne married Samuel Brushett, and over the next 20 years they raised their two children while building Dominion Biologicals Ltd., a leading Maritime biotechnology company.
After conquering lymphoma in 1991, Dianne received her Master's degree in Atlantic Canada Studies from St. Mary’s University. She was a lifelong learner with an insatiable curiosity. In 1993, after years of public service in her community, Dianne was elected the first female Liberal Member of Parliament for Cumberland-Colchester and served between 1993 – 1997. Among her proudest achievements was serving with Prime Minister Jean Chretien.
Dianne loved spending summers with her granddaughters, Willa and Hanna, and caring for her mother, Margaret, until her passing in 2014. Her greatest pride was seeing her children and grandchildren thrive. Always one to help others with a meal, find humor in a tough situation, and “Carry On!” with unshakable faith and resolution, she leaves a legacy of compassion, generosity, and above all, love.
Dianne is survived by daughter, Samara (Marc) Richardson, and son, Sean (Amber) Brushett; sisters, Ruth (Linwood) Giberson, Marilyn (Darrell) Chandler; bother Wayne (Mary) Tompkins; many nieces and nephews and her four cherished grandchildren, Shannon and Sammy Brushett, and Willa and Hanna Richardson.
Visitation will be held at Colchester Community Funeral Home 512 Willow St., Truro, between 6-8 p.m. on Monday July 17th. Funeral services will be held at St. John's Anglican Church, Church St., Truro, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 18th with a reception to follow. Memorials in Dianne’s name may be dedicated to the Medical Day Unit at Colchester East Hants Health Centre Foundation at https://www.canadahelps.org/dn/5714.
Condolences may be made at the family home in Truro or online at:www.ColchesterCommunity.com
