Obituary for Jonathan Kierstead

Jonathan Kierstead
Kierstead, Jonathan Mark, BSc.F, MSc.F, RPF

Age 47, of Brookfield died July 31 at home following a brief, brave and aggressive skirmish with cancer. He is survived by his wife Gail MacFarlane, daughter Tessa, sons Mac and Jake all of Brookfield; his father, John, Quispamsis, NB, mother Emily (Cosman) (Don Murray), Shortt’s Lake; sisters Lisa McCully, Portapique, and Jenny Kierstead (Blair Abbas), Halifax; nieces and nephews, a large and loving extended family, and is warmly remembered by many, many good friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by infant sister, Jennifer Lynn.
Jonathan (known to close friends as Jonnie K) was educated in the Kennebecasis Valley, NB and earned his BSc. and MSc. degrees in Forestry at UNB, Fredericton. His career included tracking grizzlies in the Rocky Mountains, conducting forest research in Mount Carleton, NB, and an intimate interlude with the piping plovers of the Maritimes, followed by a period of time in the tall timber of northern California, before returning to Nova Scotia’s South Shore forests with Bowater Mersey Paper Co. Ltd. He and family moved to Brookfield in 2012 when he accepted an appointment with the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources as Director of Forestry for the province.
Cremation has taken place; a celebration of Jonathan’s too short, but full life will be held on Friday, August 4 at 2:00 PM in Brookfield Sportsplex, 55 Carter Road, Brookfield, where he enjoyed many hours coaching his kids and playing hockey and where he had just completed a term as President of the SCMHA. An informal reception will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Colchester East Hants Health Centre Palliative Care, SCMHA or Forestry and Environmental Management Opportunities Fund at the University of New Brunswick. Committal will occur later in Kingston, NB. Arrangements are under the direction of Colchester Community Funeral Home, Truro. Online condolences may be sent to www.ColchesterCommunity.com
