Gerald William Brownell - 88, North River, passed away peacefully in the morning of December 11, 2017 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born April 2, 1929 in Eureka, Pictou County, and then moving to Truro in 1934, he was the youngest son of Blanche and Frank Brownell. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Lois (Higgins); daughter, Kimberly; son, Mark (Heidi); grandson Daniel and granddaughters Abigael and Sarah; brother, Cecil (Verna, deceased); sisters in law, Marion (Franklyn) Fulton, Sylvia (Ernie) Hingley, Goldie (Muir) Murdoch, Beverly (Norman) Hingley, Sharon (Marc) Miron; brothers in law, Lyman (Helen) Higgins and Curtis (Bette) Higgins; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Shelley; brothers, Russell, Arnold (Frances), Elmer (Faith), Archer (Mildred), and Walter; brother in law Lawrence and sister in law, Shirley Higgins. Gerald was an electrician and a teacher at the Colchester Regional Vocational School from the time it opened until his retirement. He was a member and past deacon of the First Baptist Church, a long-time member of the Masonic Lodge #43, actively involved in 4-H, a cub scout leader and a founding member of the North River and District Fire Brigade. He loved his horses which he enjoyed until he was in his 70’s. Gerald looked forward to his time spent at the family cottage in Northport. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro from where visitation will be held Wednesday, December 13 from 6-8pm beginning with a Firefighter tribute service at 6pm. Funeral Service will be held Thursday, December 14 at 2pm beginning with a Masonic Lodge tribute service at 2pm, Rev. Paul D. Worden officiating. Reception will follow. Interment at a later date in Robie Street Cemetery. If so desired, donations in Gerald’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to a charity of your choice.
