Obituary for Ellen Crowe

Crowe (Hartling) Ellen Aurelia Ruth 94, Born on September 20, 1923 in Harrigan Cove, Halifax County, passed away quietly on July 14, 2018 after a long illness. She was the eldest daughter of William and Bessie Hartling. She is survived by her sons, Ricky (Diane) of Truro and Dennis (Andrea) of Lower Sackville; her daughter, Joanne of Indian Brook; daughter-in-law, Kim of Salmon River and son-in-law, Colin MacLeod of Dartmouth. She is also survived by her sister, Janet Andrews of Lanesville; brother, William “Bill” of Kingston, Ontario along with 15 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Elmer “Andy”; sons James “Jimmy” and Michael; eldest daughter, Patricia “Pat” as well as brothers, Arthur, Everett, Edgar and Bob. Having grown up during the Depression, she was extremely resourceful and operated a backyard greenhouse for many years at her home in Lanesville. She was also an amazing cook - never owned a cookbook, and a talented seamstress, often making her own patterns for her children and grandchildren. Mother was loved deeply by all who knew her and we will surely miss her quick wit and amazing sense of humour. The family would like to thank all the “angels” of her last home, Vimy Court in Bible Hill for the excellent care given to our mother, sister, Nannie and great Nannie during the last three years of her life. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 21 at 2pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro with the Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. Reception will follow. Private family interment in Fort Ellis Cemetery. Family flowers only. If so desired, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation or charity of choice.
