Obituary for Blaine Smyth

George “Blaine” Smyth - 80, Truro, better known as Lal or Grampy to friends and grandkids, passed away peacefully with family by his side on March 2, 2019. He was the son of the late Lionel and Ina Smyth of South Tetagouche, N.B. He was married for 57 years to the love of his life, Kaye Sharon (Thomas) and is survived by her, as well as his children; Victor, Terry (Kim), Kelly (Donald) and Troy (Sarah). He is also survived by his brother, Miles; five grandchildren, Chelsea, Ethan, Kieren, Aidan and Declan; also several biological siblings whom he had the pleasure of meeting in recent years; Judy, Marven, Lynn and Gary. He was predeceased by his eldest son, Timmy and biological brother, Phil. Lal was a rover at heart and left Bathurst many times to seek employment, adventure and probably a bit of mischief. He lived in Quebec as a young man, spent time in mining camps all over the country that are too numerous to count, and finally, decided to chase his grandchildren from province to province. He lived in Ontario where Chelsea was, then moved to Alberta with Ethan and Kieren, followed them to Manitoba, then back to Alberta again. He moved back to Bathurst for a while where he spent time with Aidan and Declan, before selling the house in Bathurst to finally settle in Truro. The fact that Lal moved half a dozen times for his grandkids should be an indication of the fact that he adored them; he loved them more than life itself and took pride in anything and everything they did. He loved to watch them play sports, was proud of everything they did at school and was constantly entertained by the antics of them and their friends. He was an amazing grampy and the best “Lal.” A special thank you goes to all of the staff at the East Cumberland Lodge as well as the staff on the Medical Unit in the Colchester East Hants Health Center for their kindness, care and support. There will be a celebration of life service on Tuesday, March 5th in the Truro Fire Hall from 6-8 and in Bathurst for immediate family only. Donations in his memory may be made to the East Cumberland Lodge Palliative Care Unit in Pugwash NS, or a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are entrusted to the Colchester Community Funeral Home.
