Higgins, Gary Edward – 72, Truro. It is with much sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Gary Higgins on Sunday, January 12, 2020. Gary was born on June 4, 1947 in Springhill, N.S. to the late Albert and Grace (Adams) Higgins. He was brought up in Londonderry Station where he lived until he married. Gary joined the Canadian Army, served with the Queen’s Own Rifles and was a Canadian Peacekeeper in Cyprus. After leaving the military, he worked at Goodspeeds in Truro until he moved away in 1969. Upon returning to Nova Scotia in 1974, he entered the Commercial Safety College in Masstown for Tractor Trailer Training and pursued a career as a driver, traveling throughout Canada and the United States. Gary was a member and Past President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #26, Truro and was also Past Chairperson of Nova Scotia / Nunavut Command Provincial. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by infant son, John Albert Higgins and infant daughter, Deidre Reid Higgins; sisters, Lee Wood, Lil Mitchell; second wife, Maria (Lamont) Higgins as well as brothers-in-law, Stan, Prescott, Llewellyn, Charlie, Dennis and John. Gary is survived by sons, Scott (Tara), Sean (Trudy) and Devin; daughter, Tracie Weatherbee (Paul); step children, Randy, Richard and Tara Smith; grandchildren, Liam Higgins, Cortney Morris (Kyle), Thaine Hazel and Morgan Hazel; great granddaughter, Paisley Morris; step grandchildren, Kameron, Georgia, Richard, Reid, Kobie, Rianna and Liv; sisters, Marge Rushton, Winnie Spencer, Mary George, Jewell Beasley(Fred) and Priscilla Murphy; brother, Tommy Higgins; first wife, Sharon (Norton) Higgins as well as many nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. A Legion Tribute Service will be conducted by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #26 on Saturday, January 25th at 2 p.m. followed by special Words of Remembrance both in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro.
