Obituary for Mary Bentley

Mary Bentley
Bentley (nee Archibald), Mary Eloise - Middle Sackville. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and sister, Mary Bentley, age 81. Born September 8, 1938, Mary was the eldest daughter of the late Capt. Clarence MacDougall Archibald and the late Mary Kathleen “Mamie” (Betts) of Clifton / Truro. She was married to Douglas McClure Bentley and mother of five active children. Mary was a former member of the St. Andrews United Church Choir and the Truro Symphony. She enjoyed playing her flute and guitar. She had a genuine love of music and some of her happiest moments were spent on a dance floor. For years, she opened her home to 8-10 NSTC students, providing meals and lodging for future teachers. She spent many winters at the Truro Curling Club where she had wonderful memories of being part of a team that represented Nova Scotia at the 1981 Women’s Canadian Curling Championship, “The Lassie” in St John's, NL. This was followed with more curling, many hours of volunteering and bartending at the club. Her favorite past-time was summers spent at the family cottage where she loved to socialize with the “5 o’clock somewhere cottage cocktail gang,” a group of life-long friends at Forbes Beach. Over the years, she spent hours walking on the beach with her dogs, crocheting blankets, knitting, reading and cooking for family and friends. Mary spent the last nineteen years living with her daughter Donna and son-in-law Michel where she contentedly watched her grandchildren grow and mature. She continued to spend her summers at the family cottage and enjoyed when close friends, grandchildren and great-grandchildren visited. She was predeceased by her husband, Douglas; their youngest son, Darren; her brother, Charles “Bud” Archibald and infant great-grandson, Tristan. She is survived by her family: children, David (Dale) of Berwick, Doug (Ann) of Bahrain, Donna (Michel) Bouchard of Middle Sackville, Dan (Denise) of Cole Harbour and daughter-in-law, Brenda of Timberlea; grandchildren, Steven (Angie), Nicholas (Jaclyn), Matthew (Karen), Aaron (Monica), James (Shawn), Stephanie (Matt), Andre (Miranda), Danielle (Anthony), Amy, Sarah, Thomas and Angela (AJ); fourteen great grandchildren; brother, Joel (Clare) Archibald of Bridgewater; sister, Sharon (Richard) Smith of Truro and several nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation or service at this time due to the current state of emergency. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, SPCA or charity of your choice. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.ColchesterCommunity.com
