Obituary for Ethel Lewis

Ethel Lewis
Lewis, Ethel Caroline Mary (Higgins) – age 91, Bible Hill, passed away on April 27, 2020 at home with family by her side. Born in Central Onslow, she was the daughter of the late Charles T. and Kathleen M. (Adams) Higgins. Ethel worked for Carter Graphics in Truro as a graphic engineer for several years. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26, Ladies Auxiliary, First Baptist Church, Truro, past member of the United Commercial Travelers, Truro and past volunteer for the Kidney Foundation of Nova Scotia. Ethel was a strong woman who always put her family and friends first. She had her way of doing things and was quick to correct anyone who didn’t do them right with her clever wit. Ethel was generous and giving of her time and up until a few months ago, was volunteering, baking, keeping an immaculate home, shopping - probably for clothes and shoes and spending time with her family and huge circle of friends that cared so much for her. She loved tea in white cups, romance novels, birds – especially blue jays, cards – especially homemade ones and most likely kept every one that she received over the years. Most of all, she loved her family and her friends and you could count yourself lucky to be included in that group. She loved to travel and made many trips with her dear friend, Marge Geddes, packing an extra bag of things to give to people and children living in poverty. She would fill shoe boxes with presents for the less fortunate at Christmas time. At 91 years, Ethel lived a good, long life – her smile, laugh, hugs and sense of humour will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Ethel is survived by daughters, Brenda (Ian) Crowe, Crowes Mills, Colleen (Gregory) Muise, Lower Onslow; sons, Charles (Sharon) Wilson, Brantford, ON, Winfred, Truro, Bernard (Shirley), Debert; grandchildren, Crystal, Gregory, Shelley, Carrie, Natalie, Winfred, Tanya, Michelle, Sarah and Jacob; several great grandchildren; one great, great grandchild; sisters, Kathleen Beddel, Truro, Georgina Cock, Truro, Betty Mykytyshyn, Winnipeg, MB; brother, Charles (Helen), NL; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Ethel was predeceased by her sister, Gladys Mattix; brothers-in-law, Murray Beddel and Roy Mykytyshyn. Many thanks to Dr. Murray, Dr. Smith and all the nurses who cared for her in January. Also thanks to the VON Palliative Care team, Lisa Weatherbee and Dr. Henderson and Colchester Community Funeral Home. Ethel loved and appreciated them all. There will be no visitation at Ethel's request. A graveside service will be held at a later date in the Onslow Island Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Nova Scotia or Diabetic Association of Nova Scotia.
