Obituary for Shirley Maynard

Shirley Maynard
Shirley Ann Maynard
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Shirley Ann Maynard. She passed away peacefully at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, on June 26, 2020 in the Palliative Care Unit.

Born in Charlottetown, PEI in 1935, she would eventually move to the Truro area where show business was her life. Her father Edward Bourgeault, mother Helen Bourgeault and sister Lillian would tour throughout the Maritimes, often to packed venues, going by the name “The Singing Sweethearts” with Shirley and Lillian doing the singing. Later, they would become a Comedy show throughout the Maritimes with “Doc Eddie” as the headliner and the girls the singing duet throughout the show. Shirley was known for having a singing voice similar to Patsy Cline. When opportunity arose for her to take a microphone throughout her life, she would always sing her favorite song “I want to be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart”.

Shirley enjoyed belonging to Bowling and Dart leagues, spending time with her Down Syndrome son Shane, and enjoying having a cigarette with a French Vanilla Cappuccino. Known as being sometimes both “soft spoken” and “outspoken”, she had an appreciative side to her as well.

She is survived by her husband, Donald Maynard; sons, Eddie Maynard (Patsy), Harmony, Donald Maynard, Cape Breton, Anita (daughter-in law), Cape Breton, Billy Maynard (Kim,) Hilden, and Shane Maynard, Pugwash; grandchildren, Darla Stephan, Evan Maynard, Shannon Furlotte and Michaila Maynard; great- grandchildren, Breauna Roode and Tobi Stephan; as well as sister Lillian Weaton, Edmonton Alberta.

At Mom’s request, there will be no funeral service, a private graveside service will be held at a later date. Donations may made to a charity of choice. Arrangements under the direction of Colchester Community Funeral Home, Truro, where online condolences may be made at: www.ColchesterCommunity.com

We would also like to say “Thank you” to the staff at Townsview Estates and Colchester East Hants Health Centre,, for taking such great care of our mother. We really appreciate everything you have done for her.
