Obituary for Margaret MacKenzie

Margaret  MacKenzie
MacKenzie, Margaret Ferguson – Age 101, Amherst, formerly of Truro, passed away on August 5, 2020 in Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst. Born in Auldearn, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late Alva and Jackie (MacKay) Brownell of Northport.

Margaret graduated from Amherst High School and the Provincial Normal College. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Acadia University and a Masters of Arts in Education from Mount Saint Vincent University. Margaret taught as a teacher and principal in the rural and urban schools of Cumberland and Colchester Counties and for twenty years as Associate Professor of the Nova Scotia Teachers College. She was a long standing member of the Language Arts Committee with the Department of Education in Halifax, an honorary member of the International Reading Association and a consultant with Ginn Publishing Company. She was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal. Margaret was a member of the First United Church in Truro and an active member of U.C.W., a life member and past president of the Colchester Hospital Auxiliary, a member and past regent of Colchester Chapter I.O.D.E, a member of the Canadian Federation of University Women and a member of the Truro Golf Club.

Margaret is the last surviving member of her family with many nieces, nephews and extended family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Percy C. MacKenzie and brothers, Edison and Bertram “Bertie”.

A special thank-you to the staff of Centennial Villa, Amherst for all of your kindness and care. Donations in Margaret’s memory may be made to the Colchester Hospital Auxiliary or charity of choice.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, August 13th at 2 pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. Rev. Frank Locke will be officiating. Interment will follow in Old Barns Cemetery. COVID-19 guidelines will be in place.
