My dear Wheeler family:
My family and I offer sincere condolenses on your loss. Only time will
ease the grief and sadness you feel.
My late wife Dr. Esther Kamala James and myself were colleagues of
Dr. Barry Wheeler, M.B., B.S., since late 1968 untill we retired in 2004. 36 years.
There was a retirement party for us and Barry was asked to and gladly gave
a glowing speach about us.
During the years when he also gave anaesthesia to my patients, the most
endearing act was when he was preparing a child to have the anaestheic gas.
He would tell the child a story while keeping the gas mask hovering over the face.
His voice would be so soothing that before long the patient would be asleep.
He saved my butt a few times. On one occation he was the anaesthetist for
my patient. I asked the OR nurse for a drug and called out the dose to be
given. Barry alerted me tactfully about the dosage variance; a disaster was
averted.
For leisure, he would organize Orienteering on week-ends. The Duke of Edinburgh
awards were given out in Halifax one year and Barry was there and met the Duke.
When he answered the Duke's query with - I am family physician, sir, the Duke
apparently rejoined with - oh, one of those.
I regarded him as my friend and I am sure Kamala would agree.
Love and Peace.
Adolf James
