Obituary for Sue LaFontaine

Sue LaFontaine
LaFontaine, Sarah “Sue” Elizabeth – Age 79, Lower Truro. It is with overwhelming sadness that we announce the passing of Sue LaFontaine on January 11, 2021 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Born in Halifax on June 29th as Sarah Elizabeth, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Florence Seward. Within moments of her birth, she was nicknamed and went by Sue throughout her life.

Sue spent her youth in Halifax as a competitive ocean swimmer and Red Cross swim instructor. With her love of the water, it was only fitting that her future husband would be a sailor. Don and Sue married in Halifax on July 23rd, 1965 and began their life together.

Sue had an adventurous spirit. This spirit took her and her family across Canada. Sue, along with her loving husband, picked up and moved first to Waterloo, Ontario then on to the small town of Hafford, Saskatchewan. There, Sue and her husband traded their city life for the tractors and fields of northern Saskatchewan to raise their four children.

After several years of farming in northern Saskatchewan and the tragic death of her eldest daughter, Autumn, Sue and her family returned to the water and lived on a small lake in Sherwood Park, AB. Here, she and Don continued to raise their children until they decided to retire, sell their home and buy an RV.

Never afraid to try new things or meet new people, Sue’s infectious joy for life took well to being on the road. Don and Sue traveled for many years as they enjoyed the warm sun of the southern states meeting many people that they still call friends today.

Turning in her keys to the motorhome at the age of 72, she returned to Nova Scotia. Here she continued her love of gardening (Sue was a Master Gardener) on a small acreage in Lower Truro until her recent passing.

Sue was the loving mother to Autumn (predeceased), Don, Mike and René; proud grandmother to Becky, Katie and William and adoring wife of 56 years to Don LaFontaine.

Her gorgeous smile, warm heart and laughter will be forever remembered and deeply missed.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512Willow St., Truro, NS. There will be no visitation or funeral service at this time. A small celebration of life is being planned for the summer of 2021. If so desired, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or a charity of one’s choice.
