Obituary for Joan Walker

Joan Walker
Joan Norma Walker (nee Hiltz) passed away on Thursday, May 6th, 2021 after a brief illness. Mum was born on July 11, 1931, in the Forties Settlement in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. She was the youngest of eleven children born to the late Owen and Alice (Keddy) Hiltz.
After her education in the Forties, Mum went to Halifax to take bookkeeping. While in Halifax, she met Edison Walker, whom she married on September 8, 1951. During their married life, they travelled to Trenton, Washington DC, Halifax, Edmonton, Moosonee, the Forties and finally to Truro in 1965, where she resided until her passing.
Mum was a busy working Mum, an excellent bread maker, cookie maker and apple pie maker. She loved to embroider, quilt, knit and sew. We think she may have even won first prize for her handiwork at the New Ross Community Fair. Ever the home body, she loved people to drop in for their “pee and tea” break. The door to 134 was always open.
Mum was a lung cancer survivor since 1988. She looked forward to the annual survivor’s relay with her friend, Tony Nickerson.
A devout Christian, Mum was an active member of St. John’s Anglican Church, serving on Parish Council, the Altar Guild and was the treasurer of the ACW evening branch (who later met in the afternoon). She also volunteered at many activities.
Mum was an avid Toronto Blue Jays fan. One of her most exciting times was in 2015, when she went to Toronto to see them play at the Sky Dome.
She loved the pheasants who came up to her old garden looking for the food she left for them, and the deer who helped themselves to the apples from her tree.
As tiny as she was, she loved her A&W Teenburger that she had every Saturday for lunch. She also appointed herself unofficial security officer of their parking lot, often calling them if they forgot to put their lights on, for which they were actually grateful.
Mum is survived by her daughters, Linda Walker of Truro and Tina (Bruce) Anderson of Oakville, Ontario and son, Mark, also of Truro. She is also survived by her only grandchild, Matt Anderson and her sister, Lottie McAlpine. As well, she leaves special friend, Andre Schooten and his children, Mark, Adam and Erin, who referred to Mum as “Nani Joan.”
She was predeceased by her husband, Edison; her sisters, Abbie, Evelyn, Ina, Clara (Kay) and Marie; as well as her brothers, Reuben, Russell, Hencie and Foster.
She loved her family. She missed her departed siblings and treasured her sister, Lottie. She loved her husband and was caretaker for him for many years prior to his passing. She loved her children. She never really said all that, but she did.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Colchester Community Funeral Home. Due to COVID-19, there will be no funeral at this time. A celebration of her life will be planned, once we are able to do so.
In lieu of flowers, if anyone would like to make a donation in Mum’s memory, please consider St. John’s Anglican Church Stone Soup program, St. Augustine of Hippo Anglican Church cemetery fund in the Forties or the Colchester branch of the SPCA.
