Obituary for Donald Brown

Donald Brown
Brown, Donald Frederick – Age 77, Truro. With great sadness, we announce the passing of Donald Frederick Brown on June 3, 2021 at home with loved ones by his side. Born in Halifax on August 11, 1943, he was the only child of his mother, the late Anna May (Barkhouse) Brown of Westport / Halifax. Don and his Mom lived in California’s San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles for a number of years beginning in the mid 1950’s. Don graduated Acadia University (BSc) and Dalhousie (BEd) facilitating his career roles as teacher, counsellor, consultant and staff trainer with a federal department, HRDC.
Don enjoyed many sports. Baseball, hockey, golf, curling, marathons (3.5K) and skiing were important to him and to other family members as well. Being a team member provided him lasting friendships. The Truro Bearcat Old Timers hockey team was a highlight for approximately twenty years, as family members often travelled together creating lasting memories and friends, as did the Truro Gyro Club.
The great outdoors with nature’s beauty developed Don’s spiritual strength. Family pets over the years, three Samoyeds in succession – Nik, Candy and Mesha, brought the family great joy.
Volunteering was very important to Don and he was on various local and provincial boards. One activity that he really enjoyed was the Halifax Stanfield International Airport’s Tartan Team established to assist travelers in navigating the maze associated with larger airports. Other values held by Don were kindness to others and the importance of family in our lives.
Don is survived by his loving wife and soulmate of 53 years, Patricia (Archibald); daughter, Robyn and partner, Scott Stedman and his children, Vada and Jenson of Peterborough, ON; son, Ryan and his wife, Rosie (Lefebvre) Brown of Whitehorse, Yukon; mother-in-law, Elva Archibald; sister-in-law, Judie (Winston) Weir; brother-in-law, Brian (Karen) Archibald; nieces and nephews. As a grandfather, Don was very proud of his beloved granddaughter, Marlowe Marris (Sweet 16 in June 2021), who is very active in many sports and student activities in Peterborough. Don will be missed by many special friends and extended family members.
We wish to thank the Doctors and staff of the CEHHC as well as the VON. If so desired, donations in Don’s memory may be made to the Colchester East Hants Health Centre Foundation, VON, Canadian Cancer Society or the Colchester SPCA. At his request, there will be no visitation or service. When safe travel returns and COVID-19 is more under control, a private family memorial will take place with some ashes to spread, good memories to share and glasses to raise.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.ColchesterCommunity.com
