Obituary for Dr. John Dill

Dill, Dr. John Robert - Bible Hill, NS died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at the Palliative Care unit in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. John was the son of the late Robert and Marjorie (Height) Dill, born in New York City and raised in Chicago. He returned to Nova Scotia to complete Medical School at Dalhousie University. There he met his wife, Beverly Dill (Smith) who was a nurse at that time. This remarkable team progressed through residency, graduate school into professional practice and raised an amazing family. John’s medical education took them to London, England and Toronto and many family stories are fondly recounted of those special times. Staff physician positions in Halifax, teaching at Dalhousie Medical School and as a Respirologist and Intensivist in Sydney, Cape Breton followed. John is remembered as a “gentle giant” in the Nova Scotia medical community and was deeply respected by his medical colleagues and loved by his many patients. Given his numerous professional accomplishments, John was most proud of his enduring relationship with the love of his life, Bev and his two children, Jen (Brent) Nicholson and Jim (Michelle) Dill. He was better known as Poppy to his grandchildren; John Theodore Nicholson, Matthew Nicholson, Lily Nicholson, Grace Dill and those closest to him in later life. One of John’s favorite pastimes was at the wheel of his sailboat, travelling across the Bras D’Or lakes near Baddeck, Nova Scotia. He was a lifelong learner and took university courses after his retirement in areas of personal interest. To have a conversation about politics, economics or world events with John was one to bring your “A” game. Informed, erudite, but also kind and willing to listen, you left every conversation the better for it. Also a lifelong lover of music, he took up piano and completed the Royal Conservatory of Music. John’s positive impact on so many lives is a wonderful legacy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CEHHC Palliative Care Unit. No visitation or service by request. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. Online condolences are available by visiting www.ColchesterCommunity.com
