Obituary for Walter "Wally " Martin

Walter "Wally " Martin
Martin, Walter Matthew – Age 72, Millbrook Mi’kmaw Community, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2021 at home. Walter’s late partner, his beloved Alice Bernard, released him from suffering and embraced him to begin his journey into heaven. A lifelong community member, Walter was born on February 24, 1949 in Truro to Madeline (Julien) and the late Frederick Martin. Walter was a member of the Millbrook Sacred Heart Church. He retired from the Millbrook Band Council in 2017 after serving as the Band’s Financial Clerk for 45 years.
His early interests included the great outdoors, as he loved to hunt, fish, camp and golf. He later enjoyed Tae Chi and bowling. No one was dearer to him than his family and when visiting in We’koqma’q, he made sure to stop at the Farmers Daughter to pick up a raisin pie for his mother. Walter’s face instantly lit up each time he mentioned his dearest granddaughter, Jayla and his children, Wallace “Wally” and Mimi, with whom you would often find him dining at his favourite restaurants; The Irving and Smitty’s – where they all knew him by name.
Walter’s nieces and nephews would always greet him at the door for they knew that he had an endless supply of “gum”. No nephew or niece would be forgotten by Walter on their birthday. He made sure to spoil each one with wonderful gifts, as long as you provided him with his favourite party food, steamed hotdogs or KFC.
He is survived by his children, Mimi and Wallace Bernard, We’koqma’q; granddaughter, Jayla Bernard, We’koqma’q; his mother, Madeline Martin; siblings, Philip, Barry (Patsy), Dean (Carol), Marlene, all of Millbrook, Anita (Kenny) Doucette of Membertou; Godchildren, Jileen Julien, Kara Brooks, Peter Martin, Kayla Doucette and Jacob Cope as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
He was predeceased by his beloved partner, Alice Bernard; his father, Frederick Martin; brother, Glen Martin; nephew, Maxime Martin; sisters-in-law, Germaine (Googoo) Martin, Theresa (Bernard) Martin; maternal grandparents, the late Louise and Chief Joseph Julien of Millbrook and paternal grandparents, Lucy and Philip Martin of Listuguj.
