Obituary for Carol Gillis (Roper)

Gillis, Carol Jean – Truro, formerly of Onslow. Always the life of the party and a friend to all, Carol Jean Gillis passed away after a brief illness on August 27, 2022.

Carol was the daughter of the late Howard and Carrie (Brenton) Roper and spent the majority of her growing up years on Beech Hill Farm, Princeport. She loved the farm and all it entailed, including summers chauffeuring Senator Dennis, publisher for the Chronicle Herald. Her true love, however, was music and she and her sister, Kathryn, with their beautifully blended voices were frequent performers at local music festivals throughout their youth. Her talents served her well in later years as she entertained at both the Truro Glengarry and Keddy's piano bars, where her warmth, storytelling and twinkling blue eyes always made everyone feel welcome.

She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Cherie Brown and her husband, George Gillis; sisters, Bette (Don Chisholm) and Kathryn (Edsel Hamilton).

She is survived by her three children, Lori (Tom Partridge), Carrie (James MacQuarrie) and Jenny Gillis (Neal McCarthy); devoted nieces, Melanie MacBean and Debbie Rutherford and nephew, Don B. Chisholm. She was the proud grandmother of Andrew and Grace McCarthy, whom she loved dearly.

We take great comfort in knowing how much joy she brought to others with her wonderful sense of humour, her unparalleled ability to see the beauty in everything and the legacy of love that she leaves behind. Though we are sad to see such a bright light dimmed, we feel so grateful to have had her with us for as long as we did.

If so desired, donations in her memory may be made to the IWK Children's Hospital.

There will be no visitation or service, as per her wishes. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. Online condolences are available at www.ColchesterCommunity.com
