Obituary for Dr. Matthew Foss

Dr. Matthew Foss
Foss, Dr. Matthew Robert – Age 32, Hamilton, ON. We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Dr. Matthew Robert Foss on September 18, 2022, in Hamilton, Ontario at the young age of 32 years. Born in Saint. John, New Brunswick on December 29, 1989, Matthew grew up in Nova Scotia and was proud to call it home. He excelled in all areas of his life and was a gentle soul, full of kindness and love.

Matthew is dearly missed by his wife, Rachel Ann (née MacNeil); son, Rory and daughter, Anneliese. He was also deeply loved by his parents, Jill (née Reid) and Dennis; his twin sister, Melissa (Nicholas) and son, Ezra; grandparents, Linda (née Reicker) and Kenneth Reid; grandparents, Vera Protz and the late Earl Foss; aunt, Stacey (Andy); cousins, Kaitlyn and Alex as well as many other extended family members across New Brunswick and Ontario. Also mourning his loss are Rachel’s family, including her mother, Tonia MacNeil (née Kucharew); brother, Dr. Todd Alway and his wife, Michelle (née West) and many immediate family members who loved Matthew as one of their own.

After completing his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry and Chemistry at Dalhousie University in 2013, Matthew graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 2018, having been awarded the C.B. Stewart Gold Medal in Medicine. He loved sharing stories and photos of his adventures in New Zealand where he went sandboarding, was pushed backwards over a canyon in a bungee chair, and even sky diving. He was determined to make the most of the life he was given. He touched many lives as an Anesthesia Resident at Hamilton Health Sciences, and we are grateful for the wonderful stories of the impact that he made - we know there are many who are crushed by this news.

Matthew fought a long battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma from the age of twenty but worked hard to keep this struggle private – many were unaware that this happy-go-lucky man had been through so much. He was a magnetic person with a brilliant smile and always had a silly dad joke at the ready to spread some joy. Matthew’s greatest accomplishment was his two sweet children whom he never gave up the hope of returning to after his final admission to the Juravinski this past April. His love for them was immense and we will ensure that his memory lives on through them.

Special thanks to Dr. Parveen Wasi, Dr. Kylie Lepic, Dr. Bram Rochwerg, N.P. Margaret Forbes, and many others who were involved in his care.

Donations to the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation in Matthew’s memory are greatly appreciated.

A visitation will be held on September 28th from 6-8pm with a Funeral service on September 29th at 11am, both in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. Rev.
