Obituary for Shirley Comeau

Shirley Comeau
COMEAU (Ross), Shirley Willene, Age 83, Brookfield, passed away peacefully with her family present on December 15, 2022, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. She was the eldest child of the late Fred and Florence (Harvey) Ross.

Shirley lived her entire life in her beloved community of Brookfield, graduating from Brookfield Rural High in 1957. She took the Commercial program the following year; her time at BRHS also saw her play on the basketball and soccer teams. She worked at Patterson, Smith, Matthews, and Grant law firm in Truro in her younger years, eventually retiring from a lengthy career at the Post Office in Brookfield. She was a devoted member of Knox United Church and UCW Unit 7, as well as the Brookfield Terry Fox Committee - serving in treasury / financial positions with those groups. She gave her volunteer positions her full attention and effort and will be very much missed by those groups for her pragmatism, and dedication. She sang in the Knox Choir for many years, made all the more special when daughter, Brenda joined her there. Shirley was a very skilled quilter, seamstress, and knitter - her children and grandchildren looked forward to the warm socks, mitts, and sweaters. Shirley was an avid gardener, and even when she became ill, she was among her vegetables daily. She played softball for the legendary Brookfield Elkettes and bowled for decades in the Elks Mixed Bowling League. Her 'posse' included her sister, Elaine and dear friends, Judy (Henderson) Matheson and Aerolynn (Stevenson) Greene, who annually gathered for mini-trips full of laughs, games (which Shirl loved) and reminiscing. Her later years were enhanced by meeting and marrying Delbert Comeau, who cared for her deeply; she became close with his adult children.

She is survived by her children, Brenda (Mike) Henderson, Brookfield, Terry (Maureen Foster) Stewart, Birch Hill, Glen (Susan Hamilton) Stewart, Port Williams, Patty ( Rob Smith) Stewart, Brookfield and Greg Stewart, Chilliwack, BC; siblings, Wilfred, Trenton, ON, Elaine Healey, Wasaga Beach, ON, Austin, Brookfield, Ardith Teas, Georgetown, ON, and Derrick, Sterling, ON; step-children, Bill, Joe, Donna, and Ray Comeau, Marie Young; grand-children, Dane, Kyle, Caila, Tyler, Breanna, Matthew, Krysten, Drew, Kristy; several step-grand-children and great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was predeceased by husband, Delbert Comeau; daughter-in-law, Krista (Veenhuis) Stewart; brothers-in-law, Jim Healey, Wayne Teas, and sister-in-law, Marilyn Ross.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the health professionals at CEHHC and the VON; and for the friends who visited or otherwise reached out during her illness.

In lieu of flowers, if you wish to make a donation in Shirley's memory, she would be pleased if they went to Knox United Church or the Brookfield Terry Fox Committee.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral arrangements under the direction of Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. There will be no visitation. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 19th at 11am in Knox United Church, Brookfield, Rev. Mike W. Henderson and Rev. Larry Harrison officiating. Reception to follow in church hall. Interment at a later date in Brookfield West Side Cemetery. Online condolences may be made at www.ColchesterCommunity.com
