Obituary for Patricia Shaw (Dudka)

Patricia Shaw (Dudka)
Shaw, Patricia “Pat” Eileen

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Patricia Eileen Shaw announces her quiet passing surrounded by family on February 19, 2023, after a courageous five-year battle with cancer. She was 72. Pat was born on August 13,1950 to the late Eileen and Bill Dudka in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. Throughout Pat’s youth, she was actively involved with the local air cadets in Stellarton. After completing high school, Pat enrolled at the Nova Scotia Teachers College in 1968, graduating in 1970. She returned for an additional year completing her time at the NSTC in 1971. During her final year at the NSTC, Mom met the love of her life, Carl. The two were happily married in 1973.

Patricia’s career as a teacher first began in Jeddore. She then transferred schools and finished out her short career as an elementary school teacher at Salmon River Elementary School, in Salmon River. Mom left her career as a teacher to focus on her family, the number one priority in her life. As her kids grew up, Mom worked on Thursdays at the Maritime Cattle Market, later called Atlantic Stockyards, for 30 years.

Mom led an active life involved in the community, volunteering countless hours with, but not limited to, the Kinsmen and Kinette’s Club, Salmon River Fire Brigade Ladies Auxiliary for over 40 years, Girl Guides of Canada and countless other groups to support her kids through their many extracurricular endeavors.
Supporting her kids was always a highlight for Mom. This took her and Dad all over Canada, or wherever their children were headed! Mom was also an avid bowler with the Colchester Women’s Bowling League for over 30 years and spent many years as president of the league.

Mom had a passion for painting and crafting. She belonged to a monthly craft club for over 30 years, with many of their crafts proudly displayed throughout the house. Mom and Dad owned Carpa Creations, traveling around the Maritimes selling their styrofoam products for more than 30 years. These trips were always a highlight of the fall for them both. In her later years, Mom expanded her traveling area with trips to New Zealand, Australia and parts of Europe, with Santorini, Greece being a favorite spot.

When not supporting her family or crafting, Mom would be found at the cottage with Dad. This was their happy place. A lifelong project for them with each year bringing about new changes and additions to the property. The cottage played host to countless family Easter, Thanksgiving and lobster dinners, rook and crib games, birthday celebrations and a variety of summer parties. Mom loved time on the beach, be it exploring the sand flats with her grandchildren, swimming, or working a summer cross stitch project. At the house or the cottage there was always an open-door policy, a couch to crash on, or a seat at the dinner table. No one was ever turned away. No one ever left with an empty stomach.

Mom will be deeply missed by her family. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 48 years, Carl; her parents, Eileen and William Dudka and sister, Andrea Livingstone. She is survived by her two brothers, Bill (Sandy) and Michael. Mom will be remembered always by her children, Philip (Tanya), Carla (David), Julia (Chad) and William (Kelsey). The title of ‘Nanny’ is one she wore very proudly. She will be greatly missed by her seven grandchildren, Alex (Emily), Sam, Ben, William, Jackson, Ellie and Gwenlyn. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and cousins. Mom was also lucky to have so many close friends, many whom her kids consider family. They all meant the world to Mom.

Visitation is to be held from 6:00 – 8:00 pm on February 28th, 2023, with the funeral to be held at 2:00 pm on March 1st, 2023, both in the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. Webcasting will begin at 1:58pm (AST). There will be a reception following the funeral in the Salmon River Fire Hall. All are welcome. Donations in Pat’s name may be made to the Colchester SPCA, The University of Calgary Thrive Centre (for the EXCEL Program), Lung Cancer Canada or a charity of your choice.
