Obituary for Susan Lowry (O'Connor)

Susan Lowry (O'Connor)
Lowry, Susan Elizabeth – Greenfield. It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce that Susan Elizabeth Lowry, 61, of Greenfield left us on February 24, 2023. She was a daughter of the late Bob and Pat O’Connor, Truro and daughter-in-law of the late Jim and Rosie Lowry, Lunenburg.

She is survived by her husband, John; sisters, Diane O’Connor and Shawn Hayward; brother, David; brothers-in-law, David and Peter Lowry and Aunt Sister Rosemary Costley.

Susan was a favourite aunt to her niece, Justine and nephews, Evan Matthew, Ben, Geoffrey, Noah, Seth and Jonah. She was always there when they needed an advocate or just wanted to talk.

Susan was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec and spent her childhood in Saint John, NB. The family moved to Truro and she attended the South Colchester and CEC high schools. City life beckoned and she attended Mount St. Vincent University.

She had a kind and generous heart. She always travelled with food in the car and it was offered to those in need on many occasions.

Like her father, Susan could strike up a conversation with anyone. A self-described social person, she enjoyed the company of her friends and family.

Susan loved to drive, whether taking Pat around town or exploring the back roads of Nova Scotia; she never passed up the opportunity to get behind the wheel. Proficient at driving a manual transmission, she taught this skill to some of her nephews.

She enjoyed nature; biking, skiing, outdoor skating (but always wearing a life jacket in case the ice on the trout pond gave way), canoeing and camping in Keji, looking for moose in Cape Breton and big horn sheep in the American Rockies. Susan loved Nova Scotia; walking the beaches in all seasons or just watching the ocean at Rose Head.

On January 1, 2000, she celebrated the new century by going swimming at Lawrencetown Beach; regardless that the sand was frozen and the beach was covered with snow and ice.

Thank you to all those who helped Susan. A special acknowledgement to the staff of the VG Hospital Home Dialysis department, who made it possible for Susan to regain her freedom and enjoy her life as it used to be. Doing dialysis while parked at the beach may inspire others to not lose hope.

To Justine, Evan, Fran, Lauraleen, Marilyn and all of her other dear friends...Thank You!

A Springtime celebration of Susan will be announced.

To honour Susan and help those waiting for a Gift, please consider being a live or deceased organ donor.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Susan’s memory to the Kidney Foundation of Canada – Atlantic Canada Branch.
