Obituary for George Spinney

George Spinney
Spinney, George Arthur – Age 92, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2023, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, NS. “I will enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise, give thanks to Him and praise His name. For the Lord is good and His love endures forever, His faithfulness continues through all generations” Psalm 100:4-5.

George Arthur Spinney was born in Oxford Massachusetts on August 17,1931. He was a son of the late Alfred and Elizabeth Spinney. He is survived by his wife, Janet (Lutz), of 65 years having celebrated their wedding anniversary on September 13. Daughters, Sharon Schofield (Joe) of B.C., Darlene Trites (Cecil) of Truro, Angela Spinney (Chris Ross) of New Hampshire; ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren; sisters, Linda Hird (Murray), Laurine Baker (Robert); sister-in-law, Beatrice Spinney and brother-in-law, Roland Banks.

Besides his parents, Arthur is predeceased by siblings, Gordon Spinney, Mary Keddy, Shirley Banks, Eugene Spinney, Graham Spinney; daughter, Sheila Morse and granddaughter, Alyssa Ross.

A self attested Jack of all trades, Arthur was an accomplished tradesman and estimated that he had worked at over 40 different jobs throughout his lifetime. In his early years, he drove a truck, worked in Calgary for a geotechnical company, worked in a metal stamp press factory and sold Fuller Brush to name a few. He took a heavy-duty mechanic course which later led to employment at Ron Baltzers, where after 20 years he retired at the age of 63. He resided in Massachusetts from 1961 to 1974. He was primarily employed repairing oil burner furnaces, delivering furnace oil and pool installations.

As a young man, he desired to be a minister and although that path was not taken, his love for the Lord continued throughout his life. He was a deacon of the Aylesford Baptist Church and his love of music was evident in the church choir. Arthur also played the guitar and harmonica and in his younger years, he played in a local band. Music was a big part of his home life and he spent many Sundays chauffeuring his young daughters to singing engagements.

Arthur travelled the Atlantic coast of the US extensively, drove from Nova Scotia to Alaska, vacationed in Mexico, and travelled with Janet to Japan for a square dance conference. He enjoyed his hobby farm, ponies, exhibitions, square dancing, camping with family and friends and home renovations. In retirement, he enjoyed learning how to use his iPad for games and puzzles and took up curling.

While in the hospital, Arthur expressed his gratitude for those looking after him and declared his desire to be a good person. Arthur had an unassuming personality that was typical of a silent leader. He was a man of few words but when he spoke, he was well respected and people listened. He had a wonderful dry sense of humour and loved to laugh and tell a story, but cherished mostly, were his great hugs.

A service will be held at Middleton Funeral Home on October 26th at 1:00 pm reception to follow. In lieu of flowers donations in Arthur’s memory to The Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated. The family would like to thank the staff at Parkland and those at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre for their great care.
