Obituary for Aubrey Rutherford

Aubrey Rutherford
Rutherford, Aubrey Graham – Age 95, Truro. It is with great sadness that the family of Aubrey Graham Rutherford, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, announce his passing on Saturday, November 18, 2023, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro with his daughters by his side. He had just celebrated his 95th birthday.

Dad was born in Truro on November 4, 1928, to the late Hollis and Grace (Wynn) Rutherford. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Unable to follow his five brothers who enlisted, due to an unfortunate accident in the trainyard when he was eight years old which resulted in the loss of his right leg, Dad still did his part in helping people throughout his life. He was one of the founding members of the Truro Little League in the early 1950’s, coaching some great players on the Sportsman Braves and winning the championship the very first year!

Dad was a bookkeeper for many years with various companies. Finishing up his working days with the Department of Transportation as a dispatcher.

In 1953, Dad married our mother, Rhyna (Flynn) of Wallace, Cumberland Co. They were married for 48 years until her passing in 2001.

In 1971, he ran for Town Council for Ward 3 and held many consecutive terms until his retirement in 1994. During these terms, he served on all of the major committees. In 1981, he was appointed as a Justice of the Peace. Never one to be idle, he was also a past member of the Truro Legion; treasurer and past member of the Truro Horsemen's Club and one time member of the Kiwanis Club.

Dad loved the Blue Jays (when they were winning!) and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Dad’s brightest spot in his life came with the birth of his grandchildren. Always cheering them on at all of their events, he was the first one to tell them how proud he was of all their accomplishments.
Dad is survived by daughters, Lynn (Terry) Veniot, Lake Echo and Shelley (Kevin) Dryden, Truro; grandchildren, Daniel (Stephanie) Veniot, Nicholas (Louise) Veniot, both of Lake Echo, Eric (Mary) Dryden, Jaime Dryden and Lindsey (Pat) Dryden, all of Dartmouth. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews; his sister-in-law, Frances Flynn and her sons, Tom and James Flynn of Wallace and their families.

Besides his parents and his wife, Dad was predeceased by brothers, Archibald (WWII), Douglas, Stewart, Charles and Chester and sisters, Eva Weatherby and Margaret Weatherby.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to nephew, Bill for his weekly visits, chats and errand running. We cannot forget “Aubrey’s Girls” who made Dad’s days a little brighter. There are so many to mention, but please know all of your kindness, care and laughs with Dad were very much appreciated and brought comfort to us too. Special thank you to the compassionate nurses on D3 and also to Dr. Nicholson.
Donations in his memory to VON or a charity of choice are welcome and greatly appreciated.

A Celebration of Dad’s Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. Online condolences are available at www.ColchesterCommunity.com.
