Obituary for Margaret Ross (O'Brien)

Margaret Ross (O'Brien)
MARGARET ANNE (O’BRIEN) ROSS

How do you say goodbye to the person who molded you into the person you are today?

Mom was born February 25, 1939, to Bill (William) and Clara (MacLean) O’Brien in Londonderry, N.S. Named Margaret Anne, she was lovingly called Margie. She was the “middle” child following Lorna (Bernie), Claude (Shirley), Richard (Lois) followed by Hope (Gordon) and the baby, Susan (Arnold).

At a dance in Portapique, Mom met the man she knew she was going to marry, Richard “Dick” Ross. On September 11, 1959, they began their life together, and soon the children arrived. Lori Anne (Alan), Sandra Jane (Jamie) and David William (Janet). Their family was now complete.

After a number of moves as a military wife, Glenholme became Mom’s home for 53 years. She was involved in the small community, being a member of the Erskine United Church, the Great Village Garden Club, the Rebekka Lodge and volunteer at Shannex. Mom had many wonderful friends and neighbours, who supported and helped her after the passing of Dad in 2005.

Mom’s weekly activities consisted of get-togethers with friends to play Scrabble (oh yes, she was competitive), doing the daily Chronicle Herald crossword puzzle, feeding her birds and crows (but not those damn blue jays) and believe it or not trapping squirrels and “re-locating” them. Why, you ask? They ate all the bird seeds and that wasn’t going to happen on her watch.

Mom had a talent for turning ordinary moments into wonderful memories with her humor and quick wit. She also enjoyed her daily indulgence of Diet Pepsi, potato chips and “just a bit” of chocolate.

In September of this year, Mom said good-bye to her home and began a new stage in her life. She went without a look back saying “well, I have to live somewhere”. Yup, pragmatic to a fault. Once the decision was made, the move began. She settled into her new apartment and BINGO became her new passion. If you happened to be visiting around 1:00 Mom made it clear, you had to be on your way by 1:15. BINGO was at 1:30 sharp and she needed a seat.

After enjoying a wonderful Christmas Eve and Christmas with family, laughing, eating, and playing games, Mom decided to leave us and is now dancing with Dad.

Mom leaves to mourn her sisters, Lorna, Hope and Susan, numerous friends and of course, us, her children, her five grandchildren, Kate (Matthew), Patrick, (Stevie), Liam (Meagan), Connor, and Madison (Gregor) and her great-granddaughter, Clara Rose.

So, how do we say goodbye? We don’t. Mom, you are in our hearts forever, our gestures, our words. Until we see you again.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wallace District Volunteer Fire Department.

A visitation will be held on Friday, January 5th from 1pm until time of service at 3pm both in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. All are welcome. Marty Clark-Ettinger officiating. Webcasting will begin at 2:58pm (AST) Online condolences available at www.ColchesterCommunity.com.
