Obituary for Mary Fisher (Riddell)

Fisher (Riddell), Mary Thomson – 95, Truro/Middle Stewiacke.

Mary passed away peacefully at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow at the age of 95. She was the daughter of the late John and Isabell Riddell of Brechin, Scotland, and immigrated to Nova Scotia as a war bride in 1946.

Mary arrived in Halifax on the Queen Mary with her infant daughter, Freda, and resided in Middle Stewiacke with her husband, Rupert, for the next 60 years. At the time of her death, Mary was a resident of Edinburgh Hall in Truro.

As a young girl in Scotland, Mary played field hockey and competitive tennis. In Canada, she continued her love of sports enjoying bowling, curling and golf well into her 80’s.

Prior to his passing, Rupert and Mary travelled to Scotland and Europe as well as many parts of Canada. They especially enjoyed spending summers on PEI in their travel trailer creating great memories for their granddaughters. Mary was a long-time member of Middle Stewiacke United Church, Middle Stewiacke Friendship Club, Overseas Girls’ Club and IODE.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Freda Fisher (Nancy MacTier), St. Catherine’s, ON, and son, Terry (Joan), Cole Harbour, NS; granddaughters, Meaghan (Greg) Williams, Hong Kong, Jenanne (AJ) MacLean, Toronto, ON, and great granddaughters, Lily and Alexa Williams and soon-to-be great grandson, Baby MacLean. She was predeceased by her parents; brother, John, and husband, Rupert.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, March 23 at 2pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. A Reception will follow in the funeral home. Interment at a later date in Middle Stewiacke Cemetery. Donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Middle Stewiacke United Church, the Brookfield Sportsplex or a charity of your choice.
