Stevenson, Alice Jeanette

October 21, 1932 – June 24, 2019

It is with great sadness that the family of Alice Jeanette Stevenson announce her passing in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre after a long struggle with congestive heart failure. Alice is lovingly remembered by her children -- Robert Stevenson (Colleen), Cheryl Stevenson-Gillis (John), and Elizabeth Letcher. She is also fondly remembered by her five grandchildren -- Brianna, Tristan, Nicholas, Graeme, and Josh. She was predeceased by her parents Rosella (nee McCaul) and Francis Coates.

Alice was born in Delaps Cove, Nova Scotia, but moved to Dartmouth with her parents at an early age. During high school, she took courses at the Nova Scotia College of Art. After graduation, she was employed with Imperial Oil Limited before marrying and starting a family. Her father was a Freemason and Alice followed in his footsteps by becoming a member of the associated Order of the Eastern Star. Later in life, Alice moved to Truro with her family. She attended Nova Scotia Community College and graduated as a Cook. She served as the head cook at the Nova Scotia Residential Center in Truro before eventually retiring. Alice attended the First Baptist Church in Truro and was a member of the Hope Chest Breast Cancer Survivors Group. In her spare time, she enjoyed needlepoint, tapestry, tole painting, and cryptoquote puzzles.

Our family wishes to express our gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the 3D and Intensive Care units at Colchester East Hants Health Centre for the compassion and care that they provided Alice in her final days.
In accordance with Alice’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 26 from 6 – 8 p.m. with a Celebration of Life Service on Thursday, June 27 at 2 p.m., both in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. Pastor Ruth Tonn of First Baptist Church, Truro will officiate. Reception to follow the service.

Donations in memory of Alice can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Alice and Steve welcomed us so warmly when we moved to our first Nova Scotia home in Bridgetown, and we maintained a good friendship for many years. Alice always was ready to offer a great meal, babysitting, advice, hospitality, chauffering and open arms. I always enjoyed our pop-in visits, at her home or mine. My deep sympathy to Robert, Cheryl, Elizabeth and families on the sad loss of a remarkable, loveable and memorable mother. Wendy Woodworth

Dear Robert, Cheryl, and Liz, I am so very sorry to read of your Mom’s passing. I have such special memories of the hours and hours I spent at your home when I was a little girl growing up in Bridgetown. I can still hear your mother calling for one or the other of you when she wanted you to come. She always had a smile and welcomed many kids into her home over those years. Please know that my most heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with you and your families at this sad time. Sending my love. Sheena (Whitman) Charlton
