Obituary for Richard Samson

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Richard Charles Samson, 62, on June 23, 2019 at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, NS.

Born in Arichat, Richmond Co.,on May 7,1957, Richard was the son of the late Norman Joseph Samson and the late Mary Lillian (Acton) Samson.

In his younger years, Richard worked for Sun Alliance and Aviva Insurance in both Truro and PEI as well as other jobs throughout his lifetime.

Richard loved working with his hands and was very creative, building his first home out of logs and then another in PEI. He demonstrated his creativity and fun spirit by proudly sculpting a large dragon figure from a fallen tree that he set high in branches on his property for all to enjoy. To his surprise and delight, it became quite a tourist attraction!

Richard loved being close to nature and the freedom it offered, enjoying fishing on the ocean of his ancestral home of Isle Madame and in the waters off PEI and growing bountiful gardens, a skill he shared with our father. He learned to cook at a young age and learned to make the most delicious seafood chowder!

Our brother had a soft spot for animals, especially the neglected and abandoned ones, rescuing a kitten in recent months although very ill himself. He had a huge heart for the down-trodden, children and the elderly and gave freely to causes that would ease the suffering and hardship of others.

Richard was genuine, a free spirit, kind and generous and loved his family, both our immediate family and our large extended family, sometimes coming for a visit and bringing a "deal" he happened to find...given freely to a sibling, niece or nephew. He enjoyed card parties, our family gatherings and dress-up parties, loved to tease and had an easy laugh. His kindness extended to our mother who he helped take care of in her home for several years before her passing. But his beautiful daughter, Desiree, had a special place in his heart.

Richard is survived by his beloved daughter, Desiree Marie Samson, Charlottetown, PEI, his siblings, Adrian (Nancy)Samson, Greenfield, Monica (Wayne) Delaney, Valley, Lester (Mary)Samson, Salmon River, Allan Samson, Kelowna, BC, Beverly (Tom) Samson King, Valley, and Doris(Gilbert)Samson Betts, Brookfield, his many nieces and nephews and his great nieces and nephews.

Our family wishes to thank Dr.Bauld, the VON and Richard's Palliative Care Team for their compassionate care during his illness and to our sisters, Monica and Bev, who devoted so much time ensuring our brother was able to have the best quality of life possible during his lengthy illness.

Arrangements are being made through the Colchester Community Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place. No funeral will be held upon Richard's request. A family gathering and burial will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made in Richard's honour to the dog rescue group, Elder Dog Canada at 907 Feltzen South Rd, Rose Bay, NS B0J 2X0. The following is a poem in honour of Richard, who loved our natural world.
Sleeping in the Forest

By Mary Oliver

I thought the earth
remembered me, she
took me back so tenderly, arranging
her dark skirts, her pockets
full of lichens and seeds. I slept
as never before, a stone
on the riverbed, nothing
between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated
light as moths among the branches
of the perfect trees. All night
I heard the small kingdoms breathing
around me, the insects, and the birds
who do their work in the darkness. All night
I rose and fell, as if in water, grappling
with a luminous doom. By morning
I had vanished at least a dozen times
into something better.

" Always remembered...forever loved"
