Coupar, Elizabeth (Bette), Halifax, formerly of Truro. In celebration of a life well-lived, the family of Bette Coupar announce her passing on Monday, February 24, 2020 in Northwood in Halifax. The daughter of the late Viola Hare, Bette was born in Halifax on December 17th and passed the age of 29 a few times! She was predeceased by her loving husband of 52 years, John; her eldest daughter, Jeanne (Mike) Lipton, son-in-law, Andrew Forbes (Sandra); her sisters, Eva and Tracy and her brother, Bev. Bette is survived by her daughter, Sandra Forbes, Alberta; son, Jack (Brenda) Coupar, Dartmouth; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. Bette lived most of her life in Bible Hill - she loved her community and everyone there. She began her working life at Stanfield’s then completed a secretarial program and was employed at DND Debert. Bette was very outgoing and loved to dance. She participated in the Tuxedo Dancers tap dancing group and performed at many of the exhibitions throughout Nova Scotia and PEI. She then met and married John Coupar upon his return from WWII and by his side, they built a very successful landscape and nursery business - Coupar’s Nursery Ltd. in Bible Hill, which lasted for 75 years. During that time, she also nursed at Weir’s Nursing Home, was a Real Estate agent and co-owned a dress shop. She also managed a number of apartment buildings that she owned for many years. She was never still and had several hobbies including jewellery making, stained cut glass, knitting and curling. Bette loved music most of all and believed that everyone should have music in their lives. She could play several instruments and was also involved in the Melodies singing group in Truro until she moved to Dartmouth to be near her son in 2011. Later in life, she played in a band and even attended any local Blue Grass festival, sometimes staying in a tent or sleeping in the back of her girlfriend's van! A firm believer in continuing education, Bette attended Dalhousie University later in life, graduating at the age of 55 with a Bachelor of Science degree, of which she was very proud. Bette and John were avid travellers and would travel each year in the off season. She travelled through Canada, the US, Europe, India, China, Japan, Egypt and many Caribbean countries, but her favourites were Hawaii and the Bahamas, where they visited many times. The only country left that she wanted to see was Australia and she kept saying she was headed there next year! Bette was an avid volunteer and was one of the founding members of St. George’s Anglican Church in Bible Hill where she was the treasurer for many years. She was also a member of the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary, a ‘Rotarian Ann’ and a member of the Red Hatters Society. Bette loved her cottage in Marshville and hosted many “Brule Bridge” card games on Saturday nights with upwards of 20 people playing every week. She always had a smile on her face, loved people and had a great time wherever she was, and so did others around her. After moving to Dartmouth, Bette was lucky to find a great companion in Patrick Slaney. They attended many fundraising dinners, concerts, galas and dances together and Patrick visited her every evening at Northwood. She thought very highly of Patrick and we’re so glad she had someone to laugh with every day. Bette’s eternal optimism was infectious and she was always looking for her next great adventure. We’re sure she is tap dancing and playing her fiddle in heaven today. She will be greatly missed. A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 1st beginning at 1p.m. until time of service at 2p.m., both in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro with Rev. Dr. Peter Reid officiating. Reception to follow. Spring burial will take place in Terrace Hill Cemetery, Truro.
