Obituary for George Pye

Pye, George Douglas – Age 77, Murray Siding. The family of George Douglas Pye wish to announce his passing on February 6, 2021. George was born and raised in Sydney on Cape Breton Island. He was 77 years old. He was the son of Pearl Foote and Lewis Pye. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Carol.

George attended Sydney Academy and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at the age of eighteen. He began his military career in the Military Police Unit.

He served as an Airman at RCAF Stations LaMacaza, PQ; Sydney, NS and Barrington, NS. Following integration, which combined the Air Force, Army and Navy into one unit called the Canadian Forces, George donned the green uniform for the first time in July of 1970. He accepted a posting to CFB Lahr in the Deutch Democratic Republic (Germany) in 1971. While there, he re-mustered to the Signal Corps and proceeded to CFB Kingston, ON for training. After four years, which included a six-month stint as a Peace Keeper in the Middle East, he moved to CFB Gagetown, NB; then CFB Debert, NS and finished out his military career at CFB Mill Cove, NS. George retired after 35 years in the service.

Following his military retirement, he worked as a Commissionaire until age 71. He loved to fish and tied his own flies. He always had a garden and shared the harvest with family and friends, He particularly enjoyed eating the vegetables that he grew himself. He was an avid reader.

He died at home surrounded by the love of his family, both present in the flesh and by phone contact with those out of province. They include Jennifer Pye of Murray Siding, NS and her sons, Jacob and Sean; Joann Marks, Campbelleville, ON and her children, Peter and Rachel; Glen Pye, Charlottetown, PEI and his children, Jessica and Jonathan and Kevin Pye, BC. George is also survived by a sister and brother, Jean Slate of Enfield, NS and Earl Pye of Alberta.
A Legion Tribute service will be held on Friday, August 20th at 11am in Bible Hill Cemetery, 41 Warren Drive, Bible Hill, NS.
