Obituary for Frederick Gratto

Gratto, Frederick Earnest – 86, Truro. It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Frederick “Fred” Gratto passed away peacefully on February 18, 2021 at age 86, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Born in Truro on April 25, 1934 to the late George and Lucy (Jerrior) Gratto.

Fred worked all of his life in the automotive business as a mechanic, body man, welder and salesperson for many local dealerships. He opened his own businesses - Gratto’s Towing and Gratto’s Garage, on Young Street in the late 1960’s. Fred never saw anyone stranded and would do whatever it took to see them on their way.

Fred and Linda loved camping and especially going to the Bluegrass and Newfie Festivals in Stewiacke River Park and Ardoise with their many friends. Fred was always up for a good game of washers with the appropriate adult beverage in hand.

Fred was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #26 for more than 50 years participating in both their Dart and Bowling Leagues. Fred was also a Member of the Airforce Club in Truro for many years.
Fred enjoyed family gatherings and BBQ’s and seeing all of his grandchildren.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Linda (Blois) Gratto and children, Rhonda (Terry) Taylor, Truro Heights, Angie (Doug) Gratto, Freddy Gratto, Tammy Gratto, Connie (Chris) Gratto, all of Truro and Maria (David) Langille, Mapleton, N.S.
He is also survived by his fourteen grandchildren, Ryan, Anthony, Christine, Stephanie, Morgan, Jordan, Lance, Dekkel, Nicholas, Mellissa, Chris, Katey, Alicia, Richard; eight great grandchildren as well as his siblings, Elaine Mabey and Donald Gratto, Truro, Don Thomas, Ontario and Charles Gratto.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Wallace, Lillian, Jean, Francis, Gloria, David, Bob, Carl (Sonny), John and George.

The family would like to thank EHS, Dr. Singh and the Emergency Room staff, Dr Tanya Munro and the wonderful nurses on the Palliative Care Ward in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre for their care and compassion during this time.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
