Obituary for Winnifred "Winnie" Spencer

Winnifred "Winnie" Spencer
Spencer, Winnifred Helen – Age 75, Londonderry Station. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother on March 15, 2021 at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Springhill on October 21, 1945, Winnie was a daughter of the late Albert and Grace (Adams) Higgins of Londonderry Station.

She is survived by her children, Christopher (Cindy), Debert, Tanya (Patrick), Londonderry, Trevor (Arran), Londonderry Station; brother, Thomas, Truro; sisters, Marjorie (Ruebon), Amherst, Mary (Robert), Truro, Jewell, Truro and Priscilla, Truro. Also survived by many well-loved grandchildren, Tessa, Brooke (Mike), Carly, McKayla, Alicia and Wyatt; step grandchildren, Chellcea and Brandon; great grandchildren, Arlo, Isla and Okly; several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Sharon.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Dennie Spencer; two sons in infancy, Gary Dennis and Kirk Martin; brother, Gary; sisters, Lee Wood, Lil Mitchell; sister-in-law, Maria; brothers-in-law, Stan, Prescott, Llewellyn, Fred and John.

In Winnie’s earlier years, she worked as a caregiver and foster mother to several children. She loved feeding the birds, especially the hummingbirds. She also loved going on road trips. Her greatest passion was having her grandchildren around, telling them stories and of course, keeping a well-stocked “treat cupboard” for them and herself. Winnie also enjoyed talking to her great grandchildren on Snapchat which she did every day.

The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to the VON staff and Palliative Care for their care and kindness which allowed Winnie to remain at home in her final days. A special thank you to Peter and the staff of the Medicine Shoppe on Robie Street.

There is no service per Winnie’s wishes. There will be a Graveside Interment Saturday, July 24 at 2pm Mahon Cemetery, Great Village with Mr. Cory Lunn officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VON or Palliative Care. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS.
