Obituary for Doris McCallum (Dearmond)

Doris Laverne (Dearmond) McCallum

Our family is deeply saddened to announce the death of dear mother, Doris Laverne McCallum, nee Dearmond, at the age of 94 on June 28th 2022. She was the daughter of the Late Lyman and Edith Dearmond of Beaver Brook, Colchester County, N.S. and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mom was the widow of Sylvester McCallum, with whom she shared 70 years of happy marriage.

Surviving are daughter Elva Haggarty (Michael) of Truro; son Stuart McCallum of Valley; grandchildren Shannon Haggarty of Beaver Brook and Tara Hingley (Craig) of Gleniffer Lake Alberta; as well as great-granddaughter Jacy Lyan Hingley of Gleniffer Lake.

Mom is predeceased by our dad, Sir Sylvester McCallum, her dear daughter-in-law Joanne McCallum, and her much loved granddaughter Michelle Lyan McCallum. She is also predeceased by sisters Margaret Meagher (Bonner, Mosher), Edna Morrison, Helen Fraser (Sampson), Elizabeth Collins, and Shirley Sponagle (Kennedy) and brothers Willis and Walter Dearmond; as well as several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Mom had a strong work ethic, born of her upbringing during the Great Depression; a strong faith in God; and a firm belief in fairness and social justice for all people. For this reason, she worked hard in her community and her church toward making a better life for the poor, the disenfranchised and the weak – both physically and politically. In 2012 Mom was recognized by the Canadian Centre for Ecumenism for her work with Ten Days for World Development, a Social Justice program that has now developed into Kairos. She still had a strong interest in these endeavors. She has also been recognized for her steadfast work within her community, and the United Church Women’s group, for whom she instigated and helped design the first membership pin.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Old Barns United Church on July 7th 2022 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Joe Wynne presiding. Burial will take place following the service at Old Barns Cemetery.

Arrangements and cremation are under the care and direction of Colchester Community Funeral Home
