Obituary for Ethel Brown (McNutt)

Ethel Doreen Brown of Truro, daughter of the late Melissa Jane Newton, was born September 9, 1936, and passed away peacefully in the Colchester East Hants Heath Centre, Truro on August 20, 2022. She is survived by daughters, Gayle (Chris Foote), Nanoose Bay, British Columbia, Cherri (Todd Brown), Lower Sackville, and Cindy Franke, Calgary, Alberta and son, Stephan (Bonnie), Salmon River. She is also survived by much loved grandchildren, Kyle and Jordan.

Ethel, born in Salmon River, lived her whole life in or near Truro and was always a proud ambassador for the area. Known for having boundless energy, a fiercely independent spirit, though friendly and welcoming, she greatly enjoyed raising her family in Central Onslow with summer days spent taking her children and any neighborhood kids available to the beach or favorite swimming hole. These happy times often ended with Ethel barbequing endless hotdogs or hamburgers for all, or with cooking up buckets of clams after a day at the beach at Five Islands Park. A favorite treat of Ethel’s was an order of deep-fried clams (not clam strips!) and fries from Granny’s Restaurant near the Park.

Later in life, Ethel worked for many years at the Chow Family restaurant in Truro where her energy and friendliness found a welcoming home. She always enjoyed meeting people and was proud of providing fast and friendly service. After retirement, Ethel loved being part of the lives of her grandchildren, Kyle and Jordan and was very happy to take them to activities, to watch them in school concerts, and was extremely proud to see them head off to university.

Throughout her life, Ethel was happiest when in motion. She was a competitive curler at the Truro Curling Club, played softball, took daily ‘walks’ (often described as ‘runs’ by those attempting to go with her). Her favorite place to walk, and probably her favorite place to be, was Victoria Park in Truro. She walked the trails as often as she could and always appreciated the beauty and peacefulness of the forest, streams, and waterfalls. Many will remember encountering her there and having a friendly chat in her beloved place.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

There will be no visitation and a private family interment is planned for a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. Expressions of sympathy may be e-mailed to: ethelb@mail.com.
