Obituary for John Davis

In memory of Johnny Davis who passed away on September 11, 2022.

I miss him so deeply, I can't explain - always with me.
Love Dad

On Sunday, September 11, 2022, basking in the presence of the full moon, John Alexander Davis passed away at the age of 60. His journey to another shore leaves a tremendous ache in the hearts of his wife, Suzanne (Drzymala) and their two boys, Riley and Cash; his parents, John (Wanda) Davis and Jackie Davis; siblings, Jimmy (Joanne), Al (Gigi) and Stacey (Chuck) along with many cousins, nieces and nephews, in laws and cherished friends from all over Canada, the United States, England and Europe.

Born and raised in Truro, Nova Scotia, John found his way west at the age of nineteen, after an invitation from a friend to explore the land - a trip that would change his life forever. Although he cherished the east coast and it ran strong in his blood, he never looked back.

John loved the west - the vast prairies, our beloved city of Calgary, eclectic small towns, the expansive mountains and the big open Alberta skies.

He loved it all.

Those close to him share fond memories of his passion for long, slow road trips - always taking the time to discover new swimming holes, explore back-country roads and beautiful scenery - all without watching the clock. He truly embraced the journey as well as the destination. We will never forget that.

John is best known now for being a handyman (as he called himself), and in fact had a wide range of interests and skills that lent him to enjoying several jobs - working on service rigs, paving, vacuum, and cookware sales, and eventually property management. He loved many things ranging from yoga to hockey, but most of all he loved the freedom of the wide-open roads - discovered often by motorbike, a treasured old truck or the family’s beloved airstream. He had a lifelong love for cars and trucks, and a deep reverence for timeless classics.

In his final months of life, though, he was strengthened by a clarity that emerged like a bright light in darkness - true freedom - finding peace and presence in the face of uncertainty and illness. He became our lighthouse - offering deep healing for himself and those of us closest to him. He lived this sacred time with grace and steadfast faith. Having struggled at times, as we all do in life, we felt anchored in his presence - giving us inspiration as we move forward to face our own challenges with love and courage.

His wishes for us left behind are to embrace any type of weather (by always wearing wool), be kind to each other and of course - eat real butter, buy quality chocolate and don’t skimp on the garlic.

John's celebration of life was held on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at 2:00 pm with light refreshments and snacks to follow. Livestream link will be added when available. Calgary Centre for Spiritual Living (4411 Manitoba Rd SE, Calgary, Alberta).

If you choose, donations may be made in honour of John, towards the purchase of a memorial bench at one of his favourite spots to sit and reflect, Heritage Park, Calgary. In addition, another will be placed where his story began and a place which shares his heart - Truro, Nova Scotia inmemoryofjohndavis@icloud.com (auto deposit- no password required).
