Obituary for Ying Joe (Wong)

Joe, Ying Fu – Age 91, Truro. On October 13, 2022, we lost our beloved mother, Ying Fu Joe (Wong).

Whether it was four or twenty people to be fed, our mom was always at ease in the kitchen, ever ready to cook with her wok or fry pan. After many years of honing her cooking skills, her signature dishes were renowned amongst family, friends, and even acquaintances.

In 1958, with three children in tow, Ying immigrated from China/Hong Kong, not speaking one word of English. After four days of travel, she disembarked on the Halifax airport tarmac, eventually arriving in Truro via a Volkswagen Beetle. We are forever grateful for her courage in starting a new life on Canadian soil.

Aside from her cooking fame, Ying also excelled at mathematics and possessed a phenomenal memory when it came to recalling dates and events. At an early age, she taught herself how to sew, make her own patterns, and knit. Ying was also an avid Mahjong player. This passion had recently been revived by her grandchildren and great grandchildren with Ying teaching and showing them how to compete at the game. Those special afternoons spent together were great bonding experiences.

Our mother will be greatly missed as she has been instrumental in having weekly or monthly get-togethers with her special dinners and delicious meals, which at times included 4 generations of the Joe clan.

It has been expressed that, “behind every successful man is a strong woman”, and certainly Ying has been the backbone of our family and a strong supporter of our father’s various endeavors. She was also generous, kind-hearted, and compassionate toward those in need.

Ying Fu is survived by her husband of almost 75 years, Gordon (Fong Yuen). She is also survived by her children, Robert (Sylvia), Mai (Ivan, deceased), Jeff (Mary), Linda (Randy, deceased), Arthur; grandchildren, Cindy, Robyn, Christopher, Brian, Samantha (deceased), Erika, Michael, Lauren, Hilary, and Andrew. Ying is also survived by three wonderful great granddaughters, Maryn, Megan, and Elise. Ying was predeceased by her younger brother, Dick Wong (Lily).

Donations in Ying’s memory may be made to VON.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.ColchesterCommunity.com
