Obituary for Rosalind (Rose) McDonald (Hill )

McDonald (nee Hill), Rosalind “Rose” – Age 91, Truro, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2022, in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Born in Halifax on August 19, 1931, and raised in Guysborough, Rose moved back to Halifax in her teenage years where she worked for a time at Maritime Telegraph & Telephone (MT&T) as a switchboard operator. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Thomas (Tom) McDonald, and they married in September of 1952.

Rose and Tom spent much of their early married life traveling due to Tom’s work in the military. Their son, Gordon, joined the world in 1961 and traveled with them to several places in Canada as well as internationally. Moving to Truro in the summer of 1973, Rose and Tom purchased a house in Salmon River which they called home until shortly after Tom’s death in 2014.

Rose worked for many years at Crossley Carpets in Truro and loved walking. She would walk several kilometers around their neighborhood at least once, and often more, every day, stopping to chat with neighbours. Always an animal lover, she would often have a few cookies, an apple, or a handful of kibble in her pocket which she would dole out to dogs, deer, and birds as she walked.

Rose moved into Edinburgh Hall at Parkland Estates shortly after Tom passed away. Ever the social butterfly, she would often be found playing bingo, taking trips to Masstown Market, or chatting with the other residents in the Great Room. Her catchphrase was often, “just take it one day at a time.”

Rose was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Joyce, and her husband, Tom McDonald.

She is survived by her son, Gordon (Leah); her grandchildren, Jeremy (Karine) and Whitney (Chris); her great grandchildren, Thomas, Charlene, and Ethan; her sisters, Florence, Sybil and Barbara; two half-brothers; as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family thanks the staff at Parkland, her doctors and nurses at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, and a special thanks to Dr Sarge Singh and the palliative care nurses who cared for her in her final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Nova Scotia SPCA in Rose’s name are welcomed.

Cremation has taken place and arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. At Rose’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private family interment in Bible Hill Cemetery will be held at a later date.
