Obituary for Benjamin McIsaac

Benjamin McIsaac
McIsaac, Benjamin James - Age 42, Halifax, was born May 26, 1980, in Truro and died January 6, 2023, in Halifax. Ben is survived by his wife of seventeen years and partner for 21, the foil to his foibles, his closest confidant, and his tower of strength, Sandra (Gilroy) McIsaac; his parents, Dale and Sue; brother, Zac (Jenni); niece and nephew, Brooklyn and William; grandparents, Jim and Joan Priebe, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws that Ben held dear.

Sharp-witted, candid, and artfully articulate, a team writing Ben's obituary likely will not do the same justice as he would have done for any of us.

Ben was well known for his prodigious capacity for retaining and analysing information, recalling conversations, and noticing details or connections that others may not. Ben enjoyed the challenge of a good debate and if it was a point of passion, he would come much better prepared than his opponents.

Ben dedicated his early career to making a difference with not-for-profits such as Tantramar Theatre, Camp Tidnish, Parker Street Food and Furniture Bank, Habitat for Humanity, and the Bedford Youth Development Association. Finding his calling for fund development while completing his degree at Saint Mary's University, he progressed his professional career into the arts, working for Symphony Nova Scotia and the Canadian Opera Company, then continuing into executive advancement roles with the University of Alberta, and Dalhousie University.

Ben was a kind and selfless person, who never sought recognition. He volunteered his time with the Development committee of Symphony Nova Scotia, for the CASE-CCAE Support of Education Survey, and the Board of Directors (at-large) of the NS SPCA. Ben had previously volunteered with Fusion Halifax and the boards of AFP, TD Halifax Jazz Festival and Children's Wish Foundation of Nova Scotia. Ben had a deep love for animals. He and Sandra adopted six pets from local animal rescues.

Ben lived each day to its fullest, with integrity and an incredible sense of humour. He had an immense heart that strived to create opportunities that would make others happy and successful. His generosity and compassion will not be forgotten. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Many thanks to the ER and ICU staff of the QEII Halifax Infirmary for putting their hearts and souls into making every effort to care for Ben and support his family. Heartfelt thanks to Amanda, Jason, Colleen, Perry, and Darlene who were able to be there in person, and to the many who supported virtually through these last weeks.

Donations are encouraged to be made to the Benjamin James McIsaac Memorial Fund at the following link: https://www.easydonate.com/McIsaac

An enduring tribute to Ben’s work and passions will be established in his honour.

No flowers, please, but colourful clothing would be appreciated.

Webcasting will begin at 1:28pm (AST) and is available along with online condolences by visiting www.ColchesterCommunity.com.

As Ben would want, masks are required during the service.
