Obituary for Samuel Adams

Samuel Adams
Adams, Samuel Irvin – Age 84, Enfield. It is with great sorrow that the family of Samuel Irvin Adams announces his passing on January 28, 2023, in Magnolia Continuing Care. After a short, heart-breaking battle with dementia, he passed away peacefully in the arms of his family. Sam was born on February 21, 1938, in East Pubnico to the late Ernest and Evelyn Adams.

Sam is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jeanetta (Lynds), whom he met while attending a hockey game at the old Truro rink. He was a dedicated father to Kelly Thorne (Peter), Bible Hill, Ernie (Nancy), Truro, and Donna Fields (Kevin), Salmon River. He was a wonderful, caring grandfather and mentor to grandchildren, Krystin Dirk (Justin), Lethbridge, Alberta, Joshua Thorne (Amber), Salmon River, Tyler Fields (Vicki), Valley, Corey Fields (Emily Annand), Halifax, Jared Adams (Declan Smith), Truro, and Haley Adams (Tyler Boyce), St. John’s, Newfoundland. Grampie thoroughly enjoyed watching their sporting events, playing with them in the yard or dancing with them in the living room. He was delighted to introduce them to some of his pastimes including, sport-shooting, fishing and golfing. He was also extremely proud to be a great-grandfather to Ryleah, Jack, Hunter, Nate, Theo, Harrison and Holden, with whom he loved to wrestle, just as he did with us as kids.

Sam was an accomplished machinist, beginning his career at CA Annand’s machine shop in 1958. He then went on to work 43 years for Lafarge Canada as a mechanical inspector and consultant. This allowed him to work all over Canada and abroad. Dad loved his profession and loved going to work no matter the hour and many nights with very little sleep. When they called Sam for help, he was there.

Sam was a member and former president of the Nova Scotia Rifle Association and volunteered countless hours coaching young shooters to hone their skills. He won many matches himself over the years. He was also a past member of the Truro Golf Club and a founding member of The Links at Pennhills in Shubenacadie. Sam was an avid duck and deer hunter, getting his last deer at 83, which made him pretty pleased with himself. In his younger years, he relished being on the marsh duck hunting with buddies and his companion dog by his side.

Being an avid hunter, gunsmithing came naturally to Sam and he was very gifted. He opened S. Adams Gun Customizing and Machine Shop which enabled him to share his talents, work alongside his son and gave him ample opportunity to socialize, making lifelong friends from near and far. He was always busy tinkering and loved being challenged by any job brought to him.

Dad had a love for animals, and we had many dogs over the years. On more than one occasion, he would arrive home with another ducking dog or even once, picking one up while on a family drive to everyone’s surprise except his. He was as excited as us to have a year-old lab in the back seat. Sam will be sadly missed by his cats, Crash and Thunder.

Our father was a selfless person, displaying this on a stormy night when he risked his own safety to pull a lady from her burning car that had gone off the road. For this heroic act, he was awarded the Nova Scotia Medal of Bravery.

Dad’s love for East Pubnico meant summer vacations were always celebrated there with family and friends. “Sammie’s home,” or “Where’s Sammie?” met us whenever we arrived.

Dad lived life with passion and did what he loved whether it was working, playing or enjoying the simple things like birdwatching or taking in the sights and sounds of the ocean. He was our “Mr. Fix-It” that we would call when an appliance was broken or a car wouldn’t start. He had a great sense of humour and loved to playfully tease to everyone’s enjoyment. Dad was the rock that held our family together and his link will be missed.

In later years, Dad and Mom spent hours on a lake bass-fishing, going on daytrips and going to musical jams.
Besides his parents, Sam was predeceased by brothers, Leroy and Vernon.

He is also survived by sisters, Diane Goodwin and Nina Adams (Michel Muise); brother, Gary; and numerous nieces and nephews.

We would like to acknowledge Magnolia Continuing Care staff for the wonderful and loving care that Sam received during his time there. During Dad’s last days, we were treated with so much compassion and we are very grateful.

Donations in Sam’s memory may be made to Earltown Church Cemetery, Ducks Unlimited or charity of choice.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held on May 13, 2023 from 1-3pm with tributes beginning at 1:30pm with Pastor Ken Fillmore in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. Webcasting of the tributes will begin at 1:28pm (AST). Interment will take place in Earltown Church Cemetery at a later date. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.ColchesterCommunity.com.
