Obituary for Emily Crowell

Emily Crowell
Crowell, Emily Adele – Age 34, Côte Saint-Luc, QC. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear Emily on her birthday, April 10, 2024 in Montreal, QC.

Emily was born in Truro, NS. She graduated from Cobequid Educational Centre in 2008. During high school and early university, Emily worked at Canadian Tire and at the Truro Tourist Bureau. In 2012, she earned a Bachelor of Science (Biology) from Dalhousie University. Emily was a member of the Truro Cheer Club and the Tiger Cheer Team at Dalhousie University.

After completing her undergrad in 2012, and out for a bit of adventure, Emily left Nova Scotia and travelled to Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, that fall, where she worked as a language assistant through the Odyssey Program, to help students learn and improve their English-speaking skills. This was when her passion for teaching truly blossomed. She obtained her M.A. Teaching and Learning (Science and Technology) from McGill University in 2015 and began her teaching career that same year, teaching at various high schools within the English Montreal School Board, including Westmount High School, Vincent Massey Collegiate and Royal Vale School. It was during this time that she met Jay Srinivasan. They spent five wonderful years together. Sadly, their happiness was short-lived as Jay passed away just eight months after their marriage. Emily selflessly and lovingly cared for Jay in his remaining months, giving it her all.

Tragedy struck again when Emily was diagnosed with cancer only five months after Jay’s passing. Despite the challenges, Emily remained hopeful and found love again with Alec Rozsnaki-Sasseville. They forever dreamed of new treatment possibilities that would finally allow them to one day start their own family and grow old together. They got engaged on December 19, 2023, in Civic Square in Truro. Alec’s unwavering love and support during her final year brought immense comfort to Emily, which her family is so thankful for.

Emily’s interests extended beyond teaching; besides a true interest in anything nature and science related, she loved travelling and camping and was always keen for adventures. She also enjoyed gardening, trivia and karaoke nights with friends, board games (especially cousins board game night), playing the piano, spa days, going to the beach, or going to restaurants for a nice meal and spending time with her dogs at the park. She was often described as witty, determined, funny, sweet, caring, optimistic, resourceful and very bright.

Emily will be deeply missed by her parents, Terry and Kathy Crowell; her brother, Corey (Jill), numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, including her cousin/best friend, Jenna (Jeff) and their children, Sawyer and Indie, whom Emily deeply loved. She will also be missed by her father-in-law, Subbiah (Vasan) Srinivasan; brother-in-law, Dev (Jessica) Srinivasan; sister-in-law, Maya (Len) Srinivasan-Bogh; their kids and many friends she made in both Nova Scotia and Quebec. Additionally, she is mourned by her fiancé, Alec Rozsnaki-Sasseville; his parents, Joseph Rozsnaki and Suzanne Sasseville; his brother, Thomas (Pénélope) and their extended family. Emily leaves behind her beloved dogs, Jasmine and Maggie, who brought a gentle presence of comfort and joy to their beloved owner.

She was predeceased in death by her husband, Jay Srinivasan; her paternal grandparents, William Crowell and Shirley (Jake) Robben; her maternal grandparents, Ada and Raymond Ettinger and her mother-in-law, Gladys Hinch Srinivasan.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that contributions in honour of Emily be made to the CHUM Foundation for cancer research (https://www.jedonneenligne.org/fondationduchum/CM_AXE_CANCER/?lng=1) or CEHHC “We Care About Cancer”.
