Obituary for Carol MacCallum (Smith)

Carol MacCallum (Smith)
Carol Anne MacCallum (nee Smith), affectionately known as “Meme” – age 82, Valley, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 14, 2024, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in New Glasgow, May 24, 1941, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Isabelle Smith. Meme was the wife of her late beloved husband, John “Alden” MacCallum for 61 years.

Meme worked for over 32 years as a public servant for the Nova Scotia Department of Lands and Forests. She was also a long-time member of St. James Presbyterian Church. Meme and her husband were avid members of the local community bowling and curling clubs.

Meme split her time between her home in Bible Hill and her cottage in Brule. Her fondest memories were spending time at her cottage, alongside the ocean, sitting on the porch watching beautiful sunsets and spending time with family and friends. Often overseeing many washer toss and horseshoe tournaments on the meticulously kept green lawn and beautiful surrounding gardens, adorned by her fine artistry.

Born with a natural talent for crafting beauty with her hands, Meme was a masterful artist in everything. Her paintings breathed life onto canvas, her needle point told stories of generations past, and her quilts stitched together memories and warmth. She found solace and joy in her many gardens where her green thumb nurtured vibrant blooms and lush landscapes. In addition to her many artistic talents, Meme had a remarkable skill for cursive writing. Her elegant penmanship was a testament to her attention to detail and appreciation for the beauty of language. Beyond her artistic endeavours, Meme was the heart and soul of her family.

Meme cherished her many friends; however, we would like to thank Florence and Josie MacLachlan and Jimmy Ives who were more than just neighbours, always there providing friendship and support. She will truly be missed by her extended family and all who knew and loved her.

Meme is survived by her children, John (Myrna) MacCallum, Harmony, Sherry (Alan) Smith, Ottawa, Kevin MacCallum (Barb Dykeman), Upper Musquodoboit; grandchildren, James (Cecilia) Ash, Ottawa, Jeffery Hutchison, Ottawa, Lindsay (Troy) James, Cole Harbour, Linden MacCallum, Truro, Elisha MacCallum, Lower Harmony; endeared great-grandmother to, Sofia Ash, Ella Ash, JJ Hutchison, Jackson Hutchison, Camden James, Kanan James, Kingston James, Jaya MacCallum-Legere, Micah MacCallum-Legere, Tristan Mattatall; K-9 companion, Lucky and lovingly remembered by her brothers, Allan (the late Sharon), Murray (Karen), predeceased by Jamie and David and her sister, Elaine (Rick) Gautreau.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St, Truro, where Meme’s family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. on Friday, April 19, 2024.

To follow, a private interment in Bible Hill Cemetery will be held for immediate family, where Meme will be laid to rest in peace next to her loving husband, Alden.

We thank everyone for their kind words of condolence, as we celebrate a life well lived.

We also extend our thanks to the Doctors, Nurses and staff of the Palliative Care Unit at Colchester East Hants Health Centre. We are grateful for their excellent care, compassion, kindness and dignity with which they treated our beloved Meme.

Remembrances in Meme’s memory to Kemptown United Church Cemetery are welcomed.
