Obituary for Shirley Smith

Shirley Smith
Shirley (Peppard) Smith
April 1, 1931 - October 23, 2023

Mum passed away peacefully on October 23, 2023, surrounded by family in the comfort of her home. She was a daughter of the late William “Billy” and Minnie (MacKenzie) Peppard. Born in Great Village on April 1, 1931, Mum was a lifelong resident of the community.

Mum’s greatest achievement was her family. She had nine children and each one of us felt as if we were her favourite. Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. Visits were regular and usually happened in the kitchen, where often the first order of business was checking to see what kind of cookies she had baked. Saturday mornings were especially busy, knowing biscuits and cinnamon rolls would be coming out of the oven.

In addition to raising her family, Mum was known to many through her role as a playground supervisor at Great Village Elementary School and later as the Postmaster of the Great Village Post Office.

Mum led a life filled with love for her family. She will be greatly missed by her children, Keith (Debbie), Carl (Penny), Bev, Danny, Bob (Michelle), John (Claudette), Connie (Shannon), Sandy (Heather); seventeen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; brother, Vernon Peppard (Ottawa); sister-in-law, Iris Peppard (Debert), nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mum was predeceased by her husband, Donald Smith; son, Ben Smith; son-in-law, Dave Giles; sister, Gwennie (Ron) Richards, Thunder Bay and brother, Doug Peppard.

When the physical demands that come with aging became difficult for Mum, her family was grateful to be able to provide that care. In recent months when medical care was required, Mum was fortunate to be in the care of her Nurse Practitioner and the Palliative Care Team. Heartfelt thanks and appreciation are extended to Erika Baird, NP, Dr. Cortney Smith, and Angela McDonnell, RN.

On Saturday, October 28th, a graveside service will be held for family members at 1:00pm in Mahon Cemetery. An opportunity for family and friends to come together in honour of Mum’s life will be held at a later date in the Village.

If so desired, donations in Mum’s memory may be made to the SPCA or CEHHA Palliative Care Unit.

Most of all the other beautiful things in life come by twos and threes, by dozens and
hundreds. Plenty of roses, stars, sunsets, rainbows, brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles,
and cousins, comrades and friends - but only one mother in the whole world.
