Obituary for Annette Bourgeois-Bent

Annette Bourgeois-Bent
Peacefully at home with family by her side, it is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Annette Marie Bourgeois-Bent, MVO, on Monday, February 19, 2024, at age 54.

Annette, of Valley, NS, (formerly of Montague, PE) was the beloved wife of Const. Wayne “Skipper” Bent and proud mother of Colby and Shelby; loving daughter of Marguerite Bourgeois and dear sister to Robert, Jackie, Chantale (Barry) Ansems, Geraldine (Qiao), Shannon (Blaine) Jenkins, Kathryn (Dustin) Widdifield; and long-time family friend of Donna Cain. Annette was an adored aunt to her sixteen nieces and nephews, a cherished niece, cousin, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, and friend.

She was predeceased by her brother, Chris, and brother-in-law, Peter Doucette.

Born on April 17, 1969, Annette was an avid traveler and was fortunate to experience living, working, and traveling in many countries of the world. Having been interested in politics as a young teenager, she was selected into the Legislative Assembly Page Program in 1986, where she served as Head Page. Annette was tenacious when it came to seeking out the truth, especially during her years as a reporter with The Eastern Graphic and later with the Nunatsiaq News in Nunavut. There, she volunteered as a firefighter and went on to become the first Press Secretary to Paul Oakalik, Premier of Canada's newest territory.

As Chief of Protocol, she coordinated Queen Elizabeth II's Royal Visit to Nunavut in 2002. Annette was appointed, by the Queen, as a Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO), which recognizes extraordinary, important, or personal services to members of the Royal Family. She was also the recipient of the Queen's Gold and Platinum Jubilee medals.

Annette eventually moved back to the East Coast where she and her husband were raising their family. She was happiest when she was with her children; at the golf course with Colby and encouraging Shelby’s artistic ability through drawing and most recently, animation.

The family is grateful to the Palliative Care team, the nurses and doctors at the Nova Scotia Cancer Center, the Victoria General Hospital, the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, and nurses and home care at the Victorian Order of Nurses. The family also thanks friends and neighbours for their continuing support.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to her children's education fund at benteducationfund@gmail.com.

Resting at Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS, with visiting hours Thursday, February 22, 2024, from 6-8 pm. From there, Annette will be taken to Ferguson-Logan Montague Funeral Home, 40 Wood Island Hill, Montague, PE, for a visitation on Friday, February 23, 2024, from 5-8 pm. Funeral service to be held Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 1 pm, in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Montague, PE. Interment to take place at a later date in the St. Michael's Catholic Parish Church Cemetery, Iona, PE.
