Obituary for Grant Mingo

Grant Mingo
Mingo, Grant William – Age 72 of Valley. It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of Grant on February 28, 2024, in the Palliative Care Unit, Colchester East Hants Health Centre with his family by his side. Grant was born in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia and was the son of the late Clair and Norma (Murdock) Mingo.

After graduation and then studying to be an Oil Burner Mechanic, Grant began his working career with Irving Oil and then went on to become Grocery Manager with CO-OP in Tatamagouche. His wonderful rapport with the customers was noticed by management with General Foods and he was approached to become a Route Sales Representative with Hostess Potato Chips (later Pepsi Co.). Grant spent 32 years as a full-time Sales Representative with Hostess/Frito-Lay and after retirement was requested to return to work and then spent another thirteen years working part-time with the Company. Grant loved working with the public and was well known for his love of a good joke and his ability to make people laugh even in the difficult times. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and many others across the province who had the pleasure to work with him and/or share his joy in making people laugh.

Grant is survived by his wife of 48 years, Verna (Barkhouse) of Valley; son, Mark (Stephanie) of Tatamagouche; daughter, Stacy (Peter) Currie of Enfield; son, Wayne (Myra) of Sackville and his grandchildren, Connor, Laura and Nicole Mingo, Bria Currie, Phoebe and Connor Waugh. Besides his immediate family, Grant is also survived by his Uncle Sammy Murdock, Aunt Phyllis Murdock, many nieces and nephews, sisters and brothers-in-law, and many treasured cousins.

Besides his parents, Grant was predeceased by his brother, Ronald.

Much appreciation and a sincere thank you to Dr. Blaauwendraat, Dr. Rowe, Dr. Smith and the Palliative Care team, the VON/CCA team and the nurses at the Oncology Unit of the Truro hospital. An extra special thank you to the Murdock family and the Arbuckle family for your unwavering support, phone calls and visits during this extremely difficult time. Each call and visit put a smile on Grant’s face as his love of the family was immense.

Donations in memory of Grant may be made to the Colchester East-Hants Hospice Society of Truro or the Palliative Care Unit at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre.

A celebration of life for Grant will be held in the H. Douglas Boyce Village Hall, 69 Pictou Rd., Bible Hill on Thursday, March 21st from 1:30pm to 4:30 pm. A private family interment will be held in the Crossroads Cemetery, Valley at a later date.
