Obituary for Kevin Harris

Kevin Harris
Kevin Christopher Harris, of Truro, died of cancer peacefully at home, on March 3, 2024. He was born to Richard Patrick and Margaret Lorraine (Hazel) Harris in Santa Rosa, California on February 4, 1960.

Kevin grew up in California and New York, moving to a Newfoundland outport at age thirteen. He tried his hand at everything from goat herding to air traffic control and retail, eventually settling into a career in cooking, becoming a Red Seal chef. In this midst of this process, he married Lora and began a family, and after many moves from one coast to the other, they settled in Nova Scotia to raise their children.

Kevin successfully ran several resort kitchens in the Maritimes for over 20 years. Kevin credited his success to “Sheer bloody-mindedness!” and was bemused to have developed loyal kitchen teams despite his absolute insistence on excellence. Kevin truly enjoyed mentoring his kitchen staff both professionally and personally and took great satisfaction in watching their progress.

Kevin's interests included history (mainly military), science fiction, board games, and of course food. His vast array of knowledge will be greatly missed. It is characteristic of Kevin's utter integrity in how he lived his life, that he wanted it known that he “tried very hard to be a good person, without universal success”.

Kevin is survived by his wife, Lora (Payzant) Harris; children, James Harris and Claire Harris (Chris Traverse); grandchildren, Winston, Hazel, Erin and Fiadh; parents, Richard and Margaret Harris; siblings, Patrick Harris (Catherine Eilertsen) and Susan (John) Hall, six nieces and nephews.

We want to thank Dr. Bush, Drs. Jeyakumar and Rowe and the Oncology team, Dr. Smith and the Truro Palliative Care team, and the Truro VON for outstanding care and support.

All are invited to visitation in Colchester Community Funeral Home, Truro, on Sunday, March 10th, from 2-5pm, and to the Requiem Mass which will be celebrated by Father Nicholas Hatt in St. George's Anglican Church, 2222 Brunswick Street, Halifax, at 11am on Monday, March 11, 2024.

Donations may be made to Doctor's Without Borders or other charity of one's choice.
