Obituary for Gwendolyn Johnston

Gwendolyn Johnston
Johnston, Gwendolyn Clare – Age 87, Truro, passed away on January 3, 2022. Mom was one of seven children of the late Percy and Edith (Cruickshank) Taylor, Harmony Road, Salmon River.

Our mother was a loving, kind, patient and gentle soul. She loved her extended family and adored her grandchildren. She was a loyal and generous friend to many. A great listener, we often joked that when speaking with her sisters, she could not get a word in edge-wise.

Mom was a master seamstress. Her creations spanned doll clothes to draperies, numerous prom gowns and wedding dresses to men’s tailored jackets. She even outfitted an entire pipe band with hand sewn kilts and tailored jackets.

In her early 70’s, we convinced her to slow down, take a break from the many hours that she dedicated to sewing and pursue her other passion in life – dancing. She and her sister, Ruth attended the senior’s dances at the Legion in Truro. It was there that she met her dance and future life partner, Ron Wilson in 2005. They attended any dance hall that they could find in a 100 Kilometer radius, four to five times per week. Their social calendar rivalled many half their age!

Musical talent ran in the Taylor family and any get together involved music, laughter and dancing.
Mom was also a caregiver. She and our late father operated a private seniors’ care home for fifteen years prior to Dad’s death in 1992. She was also an avid gardener and loved to bake. She made the best chocolate chip cookies.

Besides her parents and her husband, Glendon “Bud” Johnston, Mom was predeceased by her dear companion, Ron Wilson and siblings, Lee Taylor, Ira Taylor, Shirley Doucette, Ruth Smith, Joe Taylor and Olga Cummings.

She is survived by her daughter, Wendy (Richard Rafuse); son, Larry; grandchildren, Paige and Mark; step grandchildren, Lori and James (Renée) and great grandchildren, Genevieve and Gabrielle.
A special thank you to the nurses, CCA’s and all the staff in Vimy Court for their kindness and the wonderful care that they provided to Mom during her almost five year stay with them.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Gwen's memory may be made to a charity of choice.

A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in Watson Cemetery, Salmon River, NS. Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, NS. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.ColchesterCommunity.com
